CICan launches applied research report

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) has released its seventh annual report on the state of applied research in Canadian colleges and institutes. Based on the findings of an extensive member survey, the report shows increased research activity in a wide variety of sectors and a growing number of private partners turning to their local college or institute to help improve their products and processes. Titled College and Institute Applied Research – Accelerating Business and Community Innovation, the report was launched Friday at Algonquin College during the institution’s Applied Research Day. It shows a continuous growth in the research capacity of colleges and institutes. More than 80% of our member institutions have now established infrastructures and policies to support applied research, while the number of specialized research centres and labs in colleges and institutes has increased by 37% from last year to reach 670. The report also shows that a total of 32,093 students were engaged in applied research projects in 2013-2014, up 9 % from the previous year. Click here for CICan’s 2013-2014 applied research report. SAIT Polytechnic has won a global challenge for its innovative strategy to promote success for post-secondary students. The Ellucian Student Success Challenge awarded SAIT with the top $15,000 US prize for its proposal highlighting ways to improve the management of students on academic probation. The proposal also outlined an opportunity for Academic Chairs to better connect students with the right resources. Congratulations SAIT!
Last week, it was back to Ottawa for a week of applied research-related activities at local Algonquin College! On Wednesday, I was proud to attend a federal funding announcement at Algonquin, where Minister Pierre Poilievre announced funding for students and faculty at both Algonquin and La Cité to allow them to develop new cutting-edge construction technology. This was part of last week’s wider national announcement in support of applied research through the Tri-Council College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program and the College Industry Innovation Fund (CIIF) Program. It was also a great opportunity to highlight for the minister all the brilliant work done in colleges across the country to support innovation. While at Algonquin, I toured the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, and I was blown away by the technologies that I witnessed. I particularly enjoyed experimenting with a thermo-graphic camera, which detects the temperature of the photography subject. I even took a thermo-graphic selfie with Minister Poilievre and Ayanna Roberts, who was shadowing me for the day! On Friday it was back at Algonquin for their Applied Research Day, where students showcased the many applied research projects that they have been working on. This was the perfect place to launch CICan’s 2013-2014 applied research report, which really highlights the growth in innovation and research in Canada’s colleges and institutes. They have many innovative developments to be quite proud of! Following that announcement, I attended an Economic Club of Canada lunch where the presidents of the four main federal parties shared their perspective on the upcoming federal election. It was a great opportunity to hear what each had to say and provided some great insights into their vision for our country’s vision. Earlier last week I also had a very productive meeting Robert Fry, Canada’s new ambassador to Argentina. Mr. Fry will be taking over in his new job in the next few days, so this was a great opportunity for us to brief him on post-secondary issues in the region and the various opportunities we are exploring.
