About the Safety Innovation Showdown Competition

We’re challenging trades students to design solutions that will revolutionize safety in the skilled trades. From innovative protective gear to advanced training methods and equipment enhancements, the possibilities are boundless. We’re looking for ideas that exemplify innovative and outside-the-box thinking— proposals that can transform job sites and every aspect of the trades for the better.

To participate in the competition, participants, in teams of a maximum of 5 or individuals, must submit a 5–10-page or 5–10-minute video proposal outlining their innovative solutions to revolutionize safety in the skilled trades. The submission should include the following elements:

  • Project Overview: Briefly introduce the problem or challenge related to safety in the skilled trades that the solution aims to address, and clearly state the objectives and proposed solutions.
  • Description of Innovation: Provide a detailed explanation of the proposed solution.
  • Technical Details: If applicable, include technical specifications, design schematics, or any relevant technical details that illustrate how the solution will work.
  • Implementation Plan: While we don’t expect a fully-fledged prototype, we ask that you provide an overview of how you foresee this idea being brought to life. For example, who could you collaborate with? Are there any potential timelines and resource requirements? This overview will help us understand the practicality and viability of your innovative concept.
  • Benefits: Clearly articulate how the proposed solution benefits not only the workers but employers, the industry, and the community more broadly.
  • Team information: Provide information about the team members, including their backgrounds, skills, and contributions to the project.
