We’re challenging you to deepen your understanding of greenhouse gases and take action against climate change. Plus, the more you engage, the more chances you’ll have to win!

Colleges and institutes make up the largest post-secondary network in Canada. Our collective impact can be massive – small actions, when multiplied, lead to transformative change. Join this national initiative and together, let’s shape a sustainable future!

Duration: The challenge runs for six weeks, from Wednesday, February 14 to March 27, 2024.

Weekly learning: Each week, you’ll dive into a new theme: general greenhouse gas emissions, energy, food, transportation, waste, and Indigenous stewardship. We’ll send you helpful information about these topics, key facts, and effective strategies to reduce emissions on campus and in your personal life.

Weekly quiz: Test your newfound knowledge with a quick, true or false quiz to reinforce what you’ve learned.

Weekly action challenge: Put your knowledge into action! Whether it’s increasing your plant-based meals or going plastic free, each week you’ll be encouraged to take a small but impactful step towards reducing your greenhouse gas emissions.

Time commitment: You can easily fit this challenge into your busy schedule. It only takes 10-15 minutes to read the educational content and complete the quiz each week, plus a little extra time for the weekly action.

Individual prizes: When you complete the weekly quiz and commit to the challenge, you’ll be entered into a draw to win $350. Those who complete all six challenges qualify for the grand prize draw of $1,000!

Institutional prizes: Based on the highest level of participation (measured by the number of weekly entries submitted by the institution’s members), four colleges or institutes from different size categories will be awarded a $3,000 bursary to support a student climate leader. Your engagement plays a crucial role in helping your institution win this meaningful prize and position it as a leader in sustainability.

Who can enter: The challenge is just for students, staff, and faculty at CICan member colleges and institutes. When signing up, you must use your institutional email address.

Case Study – Algonquin College

Michael Anderson, a computer networking instructor at Algonquin College, added mini lessons on sustainability to accompany his regular lectures. He engaged his students in the ImpAct-Climate Challenge, offering extra participation marks for their involvement. This approach not only deepened the students’ understanding of climate issues and their potential to contribute positively but also had remarkable outcomes. One of his students won the $1,000 grand prize, and their collective participation helped Algonquin secure a $3,000 bursary for a student climate leader.
