William Sandy

Gold | The Leadership Excellence Award for Students

William Sandy is profoundly dedicated to community and social development. This commitment is evident in his studies and his personal life as the fourth-year Bachelor of Social Work student at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) reaches out to affect change in both his immediate community and internationally.

Mr. Sandy has participated in NVIT’s marketing campaigns, acting as the face of its promotions campaign, and represented the school to visitors and prospective learners as a Student Ambassador. From his arrival at NVIT in 2011, Mr. Sandy has been an active member of the student body, engaging in promotion and support of student activities such as Family Fun Nights, Vancouver Sun Runs, Centennials Hockey Night, traditional craft nights, painting nights and NVIT’s puppy program._x000D_
Mr. Sandy’s efforts to promote NVIT include participation in student recruitment events and student panels which have led directly to increased student engagement. Mr. Sandy sat on NVIT’s Board of Governors for three years (2012, 2014, 2016) where he was an active member, participating in development and strategic planning exercises. He also sat on NVIT’s Strategic Enrolment Management Committee, where he participated in a focus group addressing the participation of young aboriginal males in post-secondary._x000D_
As a member of the Thompson and Shuswap Nations, Mr. Sandy is an advocate for his community, working locally as a Mentor for the Aboriginal Mentorship Network, in the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development, and helping urban Aboriginal youth to develop to their full potential._x000D_
Internationally, Mr. Sandy has participated in the United Nations Youth Caucus’ 15th Session on the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and interned for Canada World Youth on an environmental sustainability project as part of the International Aboriginal Youth Internship. Mr. Sandy also represented NVIT at the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) Youth Camp, where upon his return, he offered his feedback on areas for improvement to the WFCP staff._x000D_
Mr. Sandy is motivated to ensure students are represented in NVIT’s governance and is committed to NVIT’s mission: advancing communities, one learner at a time.

The Leadership Excellence Award for Students recognizes an individual student that has made an exceptional contribution within their institution and within the communities it serves. The nominee must be currently enrolled in a program at a CICan member institution.
