Ottawa, September 5, 2025 – Canada needs a strong, agile workforce to build big things, drive economic transformation, and meet Canada’s most pressing challenges.
Read the statement by CICan President & CEO Pari Johnston:
“Prime Minster Carney’s announcement, today, of investments in Canada’s skilled workforce, including a new reskilling package to train 50,000 workers, is an important step in recognizing the realities of industries and workers hard hit by economic uncertainty from ongoing US tariffs.
More than ever, businesses and displaced workers need the high-quality, flexible, and industry-driven upskilling, reskilling, and training options that Canada’s public colleges, institutes, CEGEPs, and polytechnics provide in all corners of the country.
As the most accessible postsecondary institutions providing training in Canada’s priority economic and social areas, our sector will play an important role in making the most of these investments – ensuring that measures designed to meet the moment become part of a long-term plan for Canada’s economic growth and prosperity.
Offering over 10,000 programs in short, flexible, and hybrid formats, we also look forward collaborating on the development on a new online training platform that will make these programs more discoverable to the Canadians who need them most.
In building a strong, agile workforce, colleges and institutes are ready partners, as we have always been, especially in times of economic transition in Canadian communities.
We look forward to collaborating with federal, provincial, and territorial governments to bring these investments to life and on a needed national workforce strategy to mobilize action towards the goal of One Canadian Economy as you’ll find in our pre-budget submission.”
Training for a Strong and Secure Canada
In the context of Canada’s most pressing challenges, we need colleges and institutes to help build a nation. With strategy, skills, and innovation, our sector can help Build Canada, support Canada’s armed forces, and grow a talent pipeline that will build the national infrastructure needed to deliver.
