This microcredential combines hands-on training with practical theory, helping you understand the structural components and functions of greenhouses. You’ll develop essential skills in plant propagation, irrigation design, pest management, nutrient management, safety, and proper plant care. Through case studies, you’ll also learn how to evaluate the viability of greenhouse operations and make informed business decisions.

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

  • Understand Greenhouse Fundamentals: Compare greenhouse types, identify their intended uses, and discuss their structural components and functions.
  • Master Plant Care and Propagation: Practice plant propagation and ensure proper care for plants at all stages of growth.
  • Ensure Safety: Incorporate biosafety, food safety, and workplace safety practices into greenhouse operations.
  • Optimize Operations and Problem Solve: Evaluate the viability of greenhouse operations, troubleshoot operational challenges, make informed logistical recommendations, and adapt to changing conditions.

This microcredential prepares you for roles in sustainable agriculture and greenhouse operations, including Greenhouse Technician, Food Security Coordinator, and Head Grower. Graduates can also pursue opportunities in community agriculture and reclamation projects, contributing to food security and sustainable food systems.

This program was developed in consultation with Indigenous communities to address the unique needs and priorities of local food security and reclamation initiatives. It is perfect for Indigenous peoples and others interested in greenhouse operations, particularly those passionate about sustainable food systems and community-driven agriculture.

It’s designed for individuals with a range of experience levels—from those new to greenhouse work to those with hands-on experience in farming. It’s also suited for someone in a management position who may not be directly involved with growing but will be managing growers and making business decisions.

Typical requirements:

  • Grade 10 completion.
  • At least three years of work or volunteer experience in any sector, which can be non-consecutive and completed in Canada or abroad.
  • Physically able to stand for at least three hours and lift up to 15 kg.
  • An interest in plant propagation, care, and learning basic business skills for greenhouse operations.
  • Proficiency in either English or French (to be assessed by the delivery institution).

Please note that requirements may vary by college. Some institutions may also offer Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR) for those with equivalent experience.

Gain practical experience in greenhouse operations through hands-on training in local greenhouse facilities. You’ll develop essential skills like plant propagation, plant care during various stages of growth, and workplace safety in real-world settings.The program also incorporates virtual simulations to deepen your understanding. For example, you might explore greenhouse structures or diagnose plant health issues in a simulated environment, preparing you for challenges you’ll face on the job.

This microcredential has three modules:

  1. Greenhouse Theory (15 hours)
    Understand different greenhouse types, their structural components, and their functions.
  2. Plant Propagation (30 hours)
    Get hands-on experience in a local greenhouse, practicing plant care, propagation, and workplace safety.
  3. Greenhouse Operations (15 hours)
    Learn to evaluate greenhouse operations and make informed logistical decisions.

Total Time Commitment: 60 hours

Program Format: Modules 1 and 3 are available online or in-person depending on the college or institute delivering the program. Module 2 takes place in your community at an operational greenhouse.

Required Materials: You’ll need to access a computer with high-speed internet for online learning. In-person components will require transportation to and from a greenhouse facility.
