Ottawa, March 4, 2022 – CICan president and CEO Denise Amyot issued the following statement on the ongoing invasion of Ukraine:
As new details emerge on Canada’s commitment to introduce new immigration streams for Ukrainians who want to come to Canada, either temporarily or permanently, I take this opportunity to amplify the messages of solidarity and support of our 140 members across Canada.
We are deeply troubled by the continued violent invasion of Ukraine by Russia. We stand with the people of Ukraine, and all non-Ukrainians also suffering in the country. We also acknowledge the many Russian citizens in Canada, and around the world, who are denouncing the actions of their government.
Canada’s colleges and institutes have many learners from both Ukraine and Russia as part of their communities and they are offering support to all individuals affected. We applaud these efforts and offer our ongoing assistance.
In 2021, nearly 1,500 Ukrainian students were studying at a college or institute in Canada (65% of Ukrainian post-secondary students in Canada) and just under 1,400 Russian students were studying at a college or institute in Canada (50% of Russian post-secondary students in Canada).
We have a long history of supporting newcomers to Canada, offering programs and services that align with community needs while focusing on the wellbeing of newcomers. With Canada creating a new fast-track line for Ukrainians who want to study in Canada, our members stand ready to ensure Ukrainians can continue their education in a safe and supportive environment. We stand ready to support these efforts and call for an end to the war and swift return to peace and democracy for Ukraine.
