CICan is providing financial incentives to small and medium-sized enterprises in construction and manufacturing to help them hire apprentices.

Eligible employers can receive $10,000 to hire an equity-deserving first-year apprentice in one of 39 Red Seal construction and manufacturing trades, or $5,000 to hire an apprentice that is not part of an equity-deserving group.

Eligible equity-deserving groups for this program include women, Indigenous people, newcomers, persons with disabilities, racialized communities including Black Canadians, and 2ELGBTQI+.

Help us connect with employers and make an impact in the trades.

Employers can use the incentive in any way they see fit. That could include salaries and training costs, purchasing equipment, or a hiring bonus for new apprentices.

We also help employers locate, hire, onboard, and retain new apprentices. Employers can receive the incentive for a maximum of two apprentices per fiscal year.

Colleges and Institutes Canada – Copyright Survey Webinar

April 4, 2023 | 5:00 - 5:55 pm EST
Online

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) recently launched the latest iteration of its Copyright Survey. Over subsequent surveys, CICan members have provided valuable information that demonstrates how colleges and institutes are engaging with copyright. This includes information on practices for clearing copyright, ensuring compliance with the Copyright Act, and the staff and resource capacity dedicated to these activities.

The information collected through this survey will allow CICan to highlight to the federal government, stakeholders and the public how our members are engaging with copyright. The results will also inform CICan’s copyright advocacy activities on any forthcoming legislation to amend the Copyright Act this year.

The deadline for members to complete the survey is May 1, 2023. The purpose of this webinar is to demonstrate how this year’s survey will support CICan’s upcoming advocacy efforts and answer any questions members have as they complete the survey.

Maintaining Commercial Fisheries While Protecting Marine Mammals

March 15, 2023 | 2:30 - 3:30 pm EST
Online

Webinar presented by the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles UNEVOC Center.
Presented by: Jérôme Laurent and Stéphanie Pieddesaux

Subject

Protecting marine mammals, such as the endangered North Atlantic black whale, while safeguarding commercial fisheries. This is a problem that worries scientists, fishermen, governments and the public alike. Authorities estimate that tens of thousands of traps and their ropes are lying in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In addition to continuing to fish, the ropes of these lost traps pose a significant entanglement threat to marine mammals. In addition, fishing traps with ropes also represent threats of entanglement when they are active.

The issue: If Canadian fisheries do not demonstrate to the United States, under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, that they are operating responsibly and that they are putting measures in place to adequately protect marine mammals, the doors will close for Canadian fish and seafood, while the United States represents their main export market.

In order to maintain this balance, the Merinov Research Center is working closely with fishermen to develop both recovery equipment for ghost fishing gear lost at sea and technologies that would allow whales to free themselves more easily from a rope in full fishing activity in case of entanglement.

To find out more about the research work in progress and the issues related to this problem, you are invited to a webinar with industrial researchers and fisheries project managers at Merinov.

About Merinov

Merinov is the largest integrated center for applied research in fishing, aquaculture, processing and enhancement of aquatic products in Canada, with more than a hundred employees and the completion of 160 projects per year. Merinov also manages the College Center for Technology Transfer (CCTT) in fisheries for the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles.

Turn your campus into a living lab!

February 23, 2023 | 4:00 - 5:00 pm EST
Online

Colleges and institutes have a vital role to play in the race to net-zero! And, with the largest post-secondary footprint in the country, our engagement goes a long way. We’ve already funded 10 successful living lab demonstration projects and are looking for 10 more.

Join us and discover six of our successful interactive living lab demonstration projects! Learn how colleges and institutes are reducing GHG emissions and raising awareness about climate change on campus and their community.

Turning your campus into a living lab means integrating applied research and teaching with campus planning, infrastructure, operations, and community development in a way that maximizes the impact of sustainability projects. The campus is a sandbox for innovation, opportunity, and testing new ideas in a local context, while learning from and sharing successes and challenges.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session to answer questions on taking the first step in turning your campus into a living lab with a focus on five areas: Indigenous approaches to sustainability, waste, transportation, buildings and land management, and food.
