CICan launches new Natural Resources Internship program

Ottawa, July 6, 2017 – Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is proud to launch a new Natural Resources Internship program aimed at helping graduates gain relevant and meaningful work experience related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the natural resources sectors. The new program will provide employers with wage subsidies of up to $15,000 to hire recent post-secondary graduates for 6 to 12 months.

The program is offered with the financial support of Natural Resources Canada as part of the national Green Jobs – Science and Technology Internship Program. CICan was selected as a delivery organization through a competitive process to place 200 recent post-secondary graduates over the next two years in internships focused on creating a greener Canada.

Developed under the Career Focus stream of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy, the CICan Natural Resources Internship program will help students transition to long‑term employment or pursue advanced studies, through hands-on experience and mentorship.

This new internship program complements CICan’s successful Clean Tech Internship program, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada. This ongoing program has already placed more than 175 recent post-secondary graduates in clean tech positions since 2015, helping them gain valuable work experience and providing Canada’s green economy with needed skills.

“This investment will offer opportunities for young Canadians to work in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, while supporting the use of clean technologies and processes in the natural resources sectors and helping to alleviate anticipated shortages of skilled workers.”

The Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of Natural Resources Canada.

“ The Natural Resources Internship program will respond to the growing demand from new graduates as well as employers for internships that are focused on improving environmental and economic outcomes in Canada. From energy efficiency and renewable energies, to sustainable resource extraction, post-secondary graduates receive training in line with emerging trends and technologies needed in the industry.”
