Capilano University is a teaching-focused university based in North Vancouver, with programming serving the Sunshine Coast and the Sea to Sky corridor. The University offers more than 100 programs, including 12 bachelor’s degrees, in areas as diverse as film and animation, early childhood education and tourism management. Capilano University enrols approximately 11,000 students each year, 7,000 in for-credit programs and 4,000 in non-credit courses. Capilano University’s North Vancouver campus is located on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and Tsleil-Waututh Nations of the Coast Salish people.

Through its unique, student-driven approach to sustainability, Capilano University is a leader in waste and energy reduction strategies among BC’s post-secondary landscape. By integrating sustainable practices in every segment of campus life, we have exceeded the Ministry’s carbon neutrality targets (energy, fleet, natural gas, paper) ranking Capilano University among the top eight post-secondary institutions in BC. We also create opportunities for students to lead, drive and support sustainability on campus through environmental awareness, local action and global thinking. Initiatives such as the bi-annual Waste Audit are integrated into the curriculum, providing a learning experience that will translate to real-world applications. Capilano University actively promotes environmentally sustainable behaviours on campus through waste and energy reduction strategies. These include our campus-wide zero-waste stations, which are intended to support Capilano’s ultimate goal of a zero-waste campus as well as elicit behaviours that will support the North Vancouver community and beyond.

He doesn’t enjoy equal status to the Godfather of Soul, but Capilano University’s James Brown continues to make a name for himself in the film industry alongside other graduates of the University’s Motion Picture Arts program (MOPA). Brown was one of four Capilano University alumni to be honoured at two respected film festivals within two months. BlueShore Financial has long been one of Capilano University’s key partners. In 2011, the then North Shore Credit Union contributed $1 million to sponsor the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts. Additionally, the BlueShore Financial Business Award was established in honour of BlueShore Financial’s generous commitment to the School of Business. The award reflects the financial institution’s values and goes to students enrolled in business studies who are actively engaged in their campus and community. Many of Cap’s business graduates have become valued employees of BlueShore Financial, some of whom have returned to Capilano as program advisors, guest lecturers and panel members for programs and courses at the University.
Every year, Capilano University teams up with United Way of the Lower Mainland to raise funds to build stronger communities, move people from poverty to possibility, and help kids be all they can be. Capilano’s efforts on behalf of the United Way help provide families and individuals living in poverty with much needed support. This support is targeted to some of the most vulnerable people in our local communities and also helps address the root causes in order to break the cycle of poverty.
