Help us maximize our collective impact on carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas reduction, habitat restoration, and biodiversity by planting trees across the country. Join CICan’s application to the Government of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program.
Announced in 2019, the 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program aims to motivate and support new tree planting projects. Over a period of 10 years, the Government of Canada will invest up to $3.2 billion in tree planting efforts to support provinces, territories, third-party organizations, and Indigenous organizations to plant two billion trees across Canada.
Specifically, 2BT’s Urban-Suburban stream supports a broad range of tree-planting projects and activities in and around population centers. These projects are expected to provide many human well-being and environmental co-benefits beyond planting trees and sequestering carbon such as improving green spaces for community use and student well-being.
Colleges and institutes are not eligible to apply for this funding. Therefore, CICan will apply on behalf its members, proposing a sector-wide initiative.
We are asking institutions prepared to plant a minimum of 250 trees within a calendar year starting in 2024, either on campus or in their community to join our application! We will schedule a follow-up meeting with all interested member institutions to discuss the details of the planned project and how the program can benefit the institution.
