CICan launches two new videos for members

As students head back to class, CICan is pleased to launch two new videos introducing itself and its members to the world. A first video was produced by Cartouche Media and will help CICan promote the college advantage to prospective students at home and abroad. This beautiful video was produced using footage provided by eleven CICan members from across the country. Thanks to Langara College, Collège Mérici, Cégep de Trois-Rivières, Cégep Limoilou, John Abbott College, George Brown College, Red River College, St. Clair College, Nova Scotia Community College, Niagara College and Sheridan for their contributions. Two students also provided narration for the video. Rebecca Lafrance of Algonquin College provided the voiceover in the English version and Camila Bouchard of Cégep Gérald-Godin in the French version. Julia Paddick, a graphic design student from Algonquin College who worked with the CICan communications team as a summer intern, produced a second animated video that provides a great introduction to CICan and its members.

On August 25, Québec City’s Cégep Garneau officially launched l’École d’entrepreneuriat de Québec, a brand new school that will foster entrepreneurship in the region. It offers a unique ecosystem where young entrepreneurs will be able to access the training and support required to successfully launch a business. The school will leverage expertise from the local business community to support this mission and can already count on several partnerships with local SMEs. L’École d’entrepreneuriat de Québec will host over 40 young entrepreneurs each year for four to six months during which they will work full-time on their business idea.
It’s back to school for college and institute students across the country, and I was grateful to visit two postsecondary institutions in the past two weeks! On September 2, I headed to Granby, Quebec to visit Cegep de Granby and its École nationale de la chanson, and I met with the cegep’s recently appointed visionary Director General Yvan O’Connor. I was accompanied by Jennifer Picard, who works in Human Resources at CICan. Since we work as a member focused organization, it’s important for CICan staff to to visit members once in a while and learn more about colleges and institutes. Jennifer and I really enjoyed Cegep de Granby, and I look forward to further collaboration with Yvan and his team. The following week, I headed to Toronto to speak with the Aboriginal Institutes Consortium. The Consortium is comprised of seven Aboriginal controlled post-secondary education and training institutes and plays a key role in defending and promoting Aboriginal education. The group was quite impressed with the scope of activities undertaken by the association with respect to Indigenous education. While in Toronto, I had the chance to visit George Brown College and got a tour of the Food Innovation & Research Studio (FIRSt) from George Brown president Anne Sado and VP of Research and Innovation Robert Luke. This facility is absolutely amazing! I got to sample incredible food and beverages created in partnership with many companies through applied research projects. I also witnessed the development of prototypes, including new measures to improve a product’s shelf life. Many awards have been received for the outstanding outcomes achieved by FIRSt, and I was quite impressed by what they did for Parkinson’s patients, an area close to my heart as my mother is affected by the disease.

Congratulations!
