CICan encouraged by budget 2015

Last Tuesday was budget day in Ottawa, and the team at CICan followed it very closely. Overall, this was a positive budget for colleges and institutes with new funding in a variety of areas of interest for our members and a note-worthy focus on skills training. One key initiative for colleges and institutes is a one-time investment of $65 million to business and industry associations that will allow them to work with willing post-secondary institutions to better align curricula with the needs of employers. CICan hopes that this new funding will deepen existing collaboration between industry and colleges. Funds will also increase for applied research projects thanks to an additional $5 million annually for the College and Community Innovation Program starting in 2016–17. This will bring the programs budget to $55 million per year. The federal budget also includes interesting measures to support Aboriginal learners, new funds to improve labour market information, and the creation of a grant dedicated to expanding college and university research and development to advance forest sector innovation will benefit the 40 colleges that support this industry. For more information, read the CICan news release.
