EFE Andes hosts its third regional forum

The Education for Employment – Andean region hosted its third Regional Forum in La Paz, Bolivia from February 25th to 27th. The goal of this forum was the establishment of an articulate and harmonized action plan for Bolivia, Colombia and Peru for the fiscal year 2015-2016. It was also an opportunity to share updates and discuss the progress made in the institutional partnership component and the development of common tools that will contribute to the final outcome of the EFE Program in the region which is improving the socio-economic well-being of vulnerable youth, particularly young women, by enhancing their integration in the job market, including self-employment. The event was inaugurated by Jiovanny Samanamud, Vice minister of Higher Education and Professional Training from the Ministry of Education of Bolivia and Alberto Palacios Hardy, Head of aid and cooperation from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). Representatives from CICan’s local partners: Ministry of Education of Bolivia, Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) from Colombia and the Ministries of Education and Labour from Peru attended this forum. The EFE Program in the Andean Region involves 19 partnerships and 22 Canadian colleges. It benefits from a total investment of CAD $18.5 M over five years from the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). This program is part of DFATD’s Skills for Employment initiative.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has begun celebrating its 50th anniversary! To mark the celebrations, the institution has unveiled a 2-storey selfie mural featuring 2,7000 selfies of members of the BCIT community. From afar, the mural depicts 2 de Havilland DHC-Beaver planes and is the second of five murals BCIT has planned. The mural is on display at the BCIT Aerospace Technology Campus. Happy anniversary BCIT!
This week was a very busy and fun one, even though I stayed in Ottawa the whole time! On Monday, the Canadian Museum of Agriculture and Food hosted the CICan senior management team for a wonderful and productive retreat. We met in the Learning Centre which is a stunningly beautiful facility. It was very nice to share insights with the CICan managers as we discussed our values and the merits of values based leadership. On Tuesday, I headed to Carleton University to attend a meeting on the impact of women in public service in policy and governance. It was nice to see fellow leaders Cheryl Jensen, president of Algonquin College, and Omer Boudreau, the Vice President of Corporate Management at the Public Service Commission of Canada. I really enjoyed the conversations, as we were able to share insights about such hot topics as ageism and women in leadership. On Thursday, I began the day at the Parliament of Canada to participate in the standing committee on Citizenship and Immigration. I was accompanied by CICan’s Cynthia Murphy and Anna Toneguzzo, as well as Gabrielle Heroux, an intern with CICan, and Huda Albuali, who has been shadowing me this week!  It was great to be accompanied by this wonderful team. We even had time to pose in front of the first Canadian flag to float on top of the Peace Tower! After the presentation, we rushed back to CICan headquarters to participate in the all-staff meeting, where the CICan staff discussed our upcoming staff retreat and shared news from the past month. We were also introduced to CICan’s Green Committee, which officially launched this week and has some great initiatives in store for us! To celebrate the launch, the committee hosted a lunch and learn with Fleming College’s president Tony Tilly, who discussed sustainability with the CICan staff and led a thought-provoking discussion. I look forward to the upcoming “green” activities here at CICan!

Congratulations!
