CEO on the Move

Last week, I met with Holland College President Brian McMillan and his Executive staff, and toured the college’s Summerside campus. Imagine my surprise to learn that the campus is a repurposed shopping mall, albeit after extensive renovations.

My visit to Prince Edward Island’s only French post-secondary institution was also a delight. Collège Acadie Î.-P.-É. President Donald DesRoches and Vice President Academic Colette Aucoin showed me around the Wellington campus, where I learned much about the college and its programs. I was especially impressed by their individual approach to students, and their work on literacy and essential skills.

Higher Education Summit

Congratulations to Colleges Ontario for hosting its successful and informative Higher Education Summit in Toronto this past week. ACCC was well represented at #2013HES by its CEO; VP of Public Policy and Canadian Partnerships; and Director of Communications. The CEO started her time in Toronto with a presentation to governors on national priorities and regional trends, as well as ways the Association is collaborating with members to support their needs at the federal level.

ACCC Director of Communications, Shawn Dearn, also used this time as an opportunity to visit with communications; marketing; and government relations professionals at both Seneca and Humber colleges, in addition to meeting with Colleges Ontario ahead of their summit. ACCC is pleased to be strengthening its connections and relationships with members and with our partners in the regional associations across Canada.

Education for Employment (EFE)

An “Education and Vocational Training for Economic Growth” themed dinner was held for the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie, on the occasion of his first visit to Senegal. Marie-Josée Fortin, ACCC Director of International Partnerships, was one of the 14 guests, which included two Senegalese Ministers, and spoke to the value of the EFE program and the need to continue supporting ACCC’s work with its African partners.

Minister Paradis signed a mutual accountability framework on behalf of the Government of Canada, confirming the partnership and support offered by Canada to Senegal.

ACCC’s time in Dakar was well spent networking with Canadian business people working in Senegal. The Development and Commercial Sections of the Embassy of Canada joined forces to bring together all the EFE stakeholders so that they work better together.

On November 8, ACCC submitted comments to the Minister of Industry and Minister of Canadian Heritage on the Notice and Notice Regime that is being considered for implementation for the Copyright Act. The Notice and Notice Regime could have an impact on members as the regulations require all internet service providers to process notices of copyright infringement from publishers/copyright owners at their own cost or face expensive penalties.

2014 ACCC Applied Research Symposium

The 2014 ACCC Applied Research Symposium is being held March 5-6, 2014 at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. The Symposium will provide a working venue for participants to share and explore strategies for integrating, managing and sustaining growth of applied research across the institution.  Sessions will include keynotes, panel presentations, dialogue and small group discussions. Visit the ACCC website for more information on the program, registration and accommodations.

Eureka! Moment

On my recent trip to Prince Edward Island, I had the pleasure of visiting Canada’s Smartest Kitchen (CSK).  What is Canada’s Smartest Kitchen? It is a fabulous Research and Development Centre at Holland College’s Culinary Institute of Canada, and a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Technology Access Centre. CSK provides culinary creativity, food science, and marketing services to small, medium and large food and beverage companies, helping them take their ideas from the concept stage through to the store shelf or restaurant table. What a great facility!

Did You Know?

There is a 50 per cent increase in how much people like or interact with your institution’s online content if you include an image or video with it. Just a little something we learned from @ambermac at #2013HES.  Amber Mac is an entrepreneur, television host, professional speaker, and bestselling author.
