World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) – World Congress 2012
President Vicente Fox, President of Mexico 2000-2006, to open the World Congress
ACCC, in collaboration with Nova Scotia Community College, will host the WFCP World Congress in 2012. Driving the Global Economy will stimulate dialogue on the profound influence of education on societies, economies and communities. Cross-cutting themes will include Local and Global Innovation, Indigenous Peoples, Access for the Disadvantaged, Sustainability, and Transformational Leadership. President Vicente Fox, President of Mexico 2000-2006, will give the opening keynote address. Twelve hundred institutional leaders, senior government officials, international partners, faculty and students will gather in Halifax in May 2012. The ACCC Annual Conference is integrated into the WFCP event. The World Congress site is available at: world.accc.ca.
Call for Proposals – Knowledge Exchange Sessions
February 3 is the deadline for proposals for the Knowledge Exchange Sessions for the World Congress. Themes include: Applied Research, Product and Process Improvement; Education and Technology; Ensuring Program Quality and Currency; Industry and Community Partnerships; International Collaboration; Serving Indigenous Peoples and Communities; Student and Faculty Mobility.

2012 ACCC Applied Research Symposium
This year’s Applied Research Symposium, Colleges and Institutes in Canada’s Innovation EcoSystem: Making It Happen, will take place in Ottawa at the Château Laurier from February 28-March 1, 2012. Keynote speakers include Dr. Howard Alper, Chair, Science, Technology and Innovation Council, Bogdan Ciobanu, Director General, NRC-Industrial Research Assistance Program, and Denise Amyot, President and CEO, Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation. Senior representatives from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the International Development Research Centre will participate. One hundred participants are expected to attend this event.
U.S. State of the Union Address
In the January 24 State of the Union Address, U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to his government’s commitment to addressing advanced skills shortages, facilitating college-industry partnerships, reducing student debt and making post-secondary education more affordable. Much of President Obama’s speech echoed the ACCC advocacy agenda, which highlights the contributions by colleges to Canada’s innovation, productivity, growth and employment.
Advisory Panel on Canada’s International Education Strategy
In March, the Advisory Panel on Canada’s International Education Strategy will submit recommendations to Ministers Fast and Flaherty on investing the $5 million per year promised in the Federal budget for marketing Canadian education abroad. The Panel held a final ‘collaboratory’ session on January 18. Ten of the 40 invitees were from colleges, institutes, polytechnics and ACCC. They recommended improved visa processing, re-established field presence in priority countries and improved understanding of Canada’s world-leading college system abroad. This will be a topic during ACCC on Parliament Hill.
