Statement by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges

Ottawa, ON, April 14, 2014 – It was with shock and sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of the Honourable Jim Flaherty. On behalf of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and our 133 member institutions, including Durham College in his riding, I offer sincere condolences to Mr. Flaherty’s family, friends and parliamentary colleagues.

Mr. Flaherty’s commitment to education and his understanding of the need to invest in learning, college applied research to support SMEs, infrastructure and Canada’s future made him admired and a friend of many across Canada’s post-secondary landscape. He is missed and remembered for his commitment to Durham College, as well as for his significant role in the creation of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

Jim Flaherty’s kindness, humour and many years of devoted public service have been a great asset to the people of Canada. He believed in education and we are grateful for his impact, which touched our college community of 1.5 million learners from coast to coast to coast.
