Bow Valley College President Honoured with ACCC Distinguished Service Award

Saturday, June 1, 2013, Penticton, BC – The Association of Canadian Community Colleges today honoured Bow Valley College President and CEO, Sharon Carry, with the presentation of its Distinguished Service Award for her service and dedication to higher learning throughout Canada.

“Exceptional leaders like Sharon have positioned Canada’s public colleges, institutes and polytechnics at the heart of Canada’s innovation system and of efforts to close the skills gap. As a leader devoted to the democratization of higher education, Sharon’s work improved the quality of life of untold thousands of learners,” said ACCC President and CEO James Knight.

Ms. Carry has an impressive list of awards and achievements to her credit as a result of three decades of compassionate and tireless advocacy for new Canadians, women, disabled persons and for accessible public education.

“Sharon represented Canada’s colleges with commitment, dignity, and wisdom. She is an articulate voice in the national media for ACCC and for the vital role of colleges in the social and economic development of Canada,” said Marilyn Luscombe, President and CEO of New Brunswick Community College.

Through her leadership, Bow Valley College has become an international leader in upgrading services and workplace essential skills development, both of which increase participation and success in college and employment.

ACCC’s Presidents’ Leadership Network presents the Distinguished Service Award to institutional presidents and CEOs, current or past, to honour exceptional service and outstanding contributions to Canadian colleges, institutes and polytechnics at the local, regional and national levels.

ACCC is the national and international voice of Canada’s publicly funded colleges, institutes and polytechnics, serving 1.5 million learners of all ages and backgrounds at campuses in 1,000 urban, rural and remote communities.
