ACCC Applauds Government Investment in College-Industry Partnerships for Innovation and Productivity

Ottawa, November 17, 2011 The federal government is moving forward with Budget 2011 commitments to support partnerships between small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and colleges and institutes.

Two new investments confirmed this week through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s (NSERC) College-University Idea to Innovation Grants and the National Research Council of Canada’s Digital Technology Adoption Pilot Program will further unleash the potential of the SME sector. In October, NSERC launched the Industrial Research Chairs for Colleges Grants which will fund 30 Chairs in colleges and institutes across Canada to increase innovation at the community level.

“Canadian small- and medium-sized businesses will benefit from these partnerships. Colleges and institutes are ideal partners for SMEs. They provide innovative applied research solutions and produce graduates with the advanced skills required by employers. We congratulate the Government of Canada for its responsiveness to the needs of business and its recognition of the contributions of colleges”, said James Knight, President and CEO of ACCC.

ACCC represents 150 publicly-funded colleges, institutes and polytechnics with campuses in 1,000 communities. These institutions are key to Canada’s economic recovery.
