ACCC Relocating to Château Laurier

May 17, 2011 — Nicole Rouillier, Chair of the Board, announced today that ACCC will relocate its offices from 1223 Michael Street North to the seventh floor of the Château Laurier at One Rideau Street in Ottawa.

“Our advocacy on behalf of members takes place in the heart of Ottawa,” she explained. “It is advantageous to be in a strategic location. After a lengthy analysis which examined many options, a unanimous decision was taken by our Board of Directors. We are delighted to have found an exceptional address adjacent to Parliament Hill at a cost comparable to our current location.”

The premises in the Château Laurier originally served as a broadcast studio for Canada’s first radio network established by the Canadian National Railway, which owned the Château. In 1936 the newly created Canadian Broadcasting Corporation absorbed the CNR network, but the studio remained in the Château. In 2006, the CBC moved out, leaving the space available for other uses. Since maintenance had been neglected, prospective tenants had difficulty envisioning the opportunity.

ACCC President and CEO James Knight had a different reaction. “I moved my previous organization to a formerly derelict warehouse in Ottawa’s Market area. When I saw the Château site for the first time, I was sure it would meet our requirements.”

“After 18 months of due diligence, the project is moving forward. Our rent will be lower, and we have adequate financial reserves to make the necessary leasehold improvements. Financially, it works well and operationally, the site brings huge advantages. I travel back and forth to downtown Ottawa many times a week, as do many of my colleagues. We will save time and money in the new location,” Knight added.

Other benefits include having an office and support services available for use by college and institute leaders when they are in Ottawa; convening Board meetings in the association’s own conference room; having stakeholders and partners visit us instead of travelling to most meetings; and crossing paths frequently with parliamentarians, who will be next door neighbours.

An advisory committee of staff representatives is helping management make the appropriate decisions on leasehold improvements and transition issues. Work is progressing well toward a move in early August.
