Call for Talent: 2021 Student Art Showcase

Colleges and Institutes Canada is looking to showcase student talent on the walls of the association’s national office at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa! For the 2021 Student Art Showcase, CICan invites students from colleges and institutes across the country to submit their artwork.

This year, we invite participants to submit work that reflects on the last year and inspires new ways of looking at the years to come: on connectedness, community, disruption, and reconciliation.

This year, a winner will be selected in each of the following six categories:

Show us what you can do with any one of five processes: etching, lithography, relief, silkscreen-printing, or papermaking. Final works can take the form of bookbinding, photo-etching, or a mixed approach combining digital media with conventional compositions.
Mixed Media
Textile, Mixed Media, or Sculpture
From stitching rich tapestries to molding clay, carving wood to unique dyeing techniques, we call on entrants in this category to get their hands dirty and show us the attention and care they bring to their craft creating three dimensional solid objects. As the name of the category suggests, the range of possible entries is vast, but they inevitably provide unique visual and tactile experiences.
What do you see when you look through a lens? Share your vision with us. Entries are encouraged from either digital or film cameras, and in black and white or colour. Works can be enhanced with digital tools, but must avoid complete alteration (consider instead the Digital Illustration/Animation track). (e.g. cropping out power lines is fine, but turning a sky from blue to orange is not).
Graphic Design
Digital Illustration or Animation
Show us how you paint with pixels. Submit a comic strip, a poster, or a multi-dimensional living image. The possible options in this category are limited only by the digital medium used to create it.
Let’s see all the ways you can apply paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface. Though you might mostly use a brush, other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used.
Show us how you use various drawing instruments on paper or other two-dimensional mediums. Instruments include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoal, chalk, pastels, and markers.

Each winner will receive a monetary prize of $350. Please note that in order to receive their prize, winning students must donate their winning artwork. If a finalist chooses not to send in their artwork, the prize will go to the runner up of the category.

What artists need know

  • After submitting your artwork, your piece will be shared with a diverse selection committee composed of CICan staff that will nominate three finalists in each category;
  • The finalists will then be presented for public voting. CICan will ask its audience to vote through our communications channels: our Perspectives newsletter, on our website, through internal communications, and across our social media channels. We may also promote the showcase, and by consequence your work, at CICan annual events, including our annual conference!
  • Your name and the title of your work will always be respectfully displayed.
  • If your work is voted the winner in a category, it will be exhibited at our Ottawa office, where it will be visible to visiting Members of Parliament, senior government officials, international dignitaries, and college and institute officials!
  • Any personal information that you submit (email address, name, etc.) will only be used in the administration of the Art Showcase (e.g. to contact you) and will never be shared beyond the administrators of this showcase.

The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2021.

Please follow the instructions below to submit your artwork. There is no limit to the number of submissions per institution (Maximum 3 submissions per student). Public voting will take place between April 26 and April 30 and winners will be announced in May 2021.

Thank you for your interest in the CICan 2021 Art Showcase! Best of luck!
