2. Upcoming Deadlines

Research Money – Deadline Extended to October 9, 2020

Research Money’s Applied Research Comes of Age continues to support our collective efforts to showcase the important contributions of college and institute  applied research in supporting innovation and talent development for business and community partners. This edition will be focused on tackling climate change and its consequences.

The CICan team has made good use of these booklets in previous years to support our advocacy efforts with the federal government for increased support for college applied research. This year the booklet will be published as a PDF for both print and digital distribution, and articles will be featured in the Applied Per$pectives section (right hand column) on the R$ website.

CICan encourages its members to showcase their applied research success stories by contacting Kirsten Hansen at Kirsten@researchmoneyinc.com

Research Money is also holding their annual conference (virtually this year) from October 19-21, 2020.  The theme is “Prospering in the Post-COVID Economy:  Building a Cooperative Model for Success.”  We encourage you to find out more.

Annual CICan Applied Research Survey – Deadline Extended to October 16, 2020

CICan urgently needs your help to complete the annual comprehensive survey on applied research activities.  Last year (2018-2019) we ran the survey on indirect costs in the place of the annual comprehensive survey, so our baseline data dates from 2017-2018 and needs to be refreshed.  The survey forms an important part of our national advocacy work and is published as an interactive report on our website for all to see.  The results are also shared regionally with provincial college associations to assist in their advocacy and information gathering.  Many thanks to those who have completed it already.  Please access the survey here.  For any questions, contact Mark Shumelda, Senior Policy Advisor, at mshumelda@collegesinstitutes.ca.

3. CICan Advocacy Updates

New NRAC members

CICan has had several new members join its National Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) over the summer months.  Please find an updated membership list here.  A warm welcome to Marie-Claude Deschênes (Cégep de La Pocatière), Mira Ray (Georgian College), Kelly Sveinson (BCARIN), and Christine Watson (Red River College).

FINA Pre-Budget 2021 Submissions

In August CICan submitted eight recommendations in its brief to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) for Budget 2021.  Our submission is cast in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and includes a recommendation for a new investment of $165M over two years in the NSERC CCI program to empower SMEs, social, health and community organizations to help restart the economy through partnered innovation and applied research with colleges.  This recommendation builds upon earlier submissions to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) and the Finance (FINA), Industry, Science and Technology (INDU), and Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) Standing Committees in the spring.

The $165M recommendation formed the basis for a second FINA pre-budget brief submitted jointly by the College Applied Research Taskforce – an inspiring coalition of twelve national and regional college associations.  We continue to advocate strongly with parliamentarians and senior government officials for additional investments in applied research, especially in the context of the unique challenges facing our members and their innovation partners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Survey on the Effects of COVID-19 on College Applied Research Offices

In August CICan also ran a survey on the effects of COVID-19 on applied research offices, following a request from ISED for more information on the current state of activities and present and future challenges.  ISED is now considering the results and we will be using the data in future advocacy as well.  We are very grateful to all of you who completed the survey, especially in the middle of the summer and on short notice!  A total of 57 institutions provided data, which represents 63% of all CICan members who receive federal funding for applied research.  Once again, thank you!  To receive a copy of the survey results please contact Mark Shumelda at mshumelda@collegesinstitutes.ca.

4. Information Sharing

Joint Mitacs-NSERC-CCI application

CICan is pleased to congratulate Mitacs and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) on their first-ever joint funding application stream for colleges.  Institutions can now apply for Mitacs Accelerate internships as part of their NSERC College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program Applied Research and Development (ARD) grants.

Applicants who wish to include Mitacs Accelerate internships in their NSERC-CCI ARD application should contact their local Mitacs Business Development representative to obtain the joint application form.

Updates from NSERC

This summer saw another CCI partnership announced.  Colleges in Ontario are now able to access joint funding between NSERC’s Alliance and Engage programs and the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s (OCE’s) Vouchers for Innovation and Productivity program.  CICan looks forward to encouraging and supporting more of these collaborations, which create a “one stop shop” for colleges and institutes engaged in applied research.

The CCI Program will not be holding a new Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) grant competition in the current 2020/21 year.

The CCI Program will be launching a new competition for the College and Community Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF). The competition will be launched in mid-October with an application deadline set for February 1, 2021. Applicants will be invited to apply for up to $120,000 per year for a duration of one to three years.

If you have any questions, please contact Danielle Dionne (danielle.dionne@nserc-crsng.gc.ca) for the ARTI grants and Chris Kelly (chris.kelly@nserc-crsng.gc.ca) or ccsif-fiscc@nserc-crsng.gc.ca for the CCSIF grants.
