In a four-partitite partnership, Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), the University of Atacama, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Chilean National and Regional Governments, and mining companies in Chile worked together to create an International Centre for Technician Training and Technology Transfer. The Centre, situtated at the University of Atacama in Copiago, Chile, was established to respond to needs required by the mining industry in Chile and in neighbouring Andean countries for highly qualified technicians and technologists. Over a period of 10 years, 22 member colleges of CICan designed the Centre and its programs including heavy equipment mechanics, industrial instrumentation, electrical maintenance, geo-mining technology, and mechanical technology.
