The recognition and inclusion of military-connected students has not been formally explored in Canada since the mid-1950s. A recent Veterans Affairs Canada investment in education and training enables qualifying Canadian Armed Forces Veterans to return to post-secondary learning with full financial sponsorship. This benefit exposed an academic and social support gap among institutional leaders, administration, faculty, and researchers for all military-connected learners. The inclusion of military-connected students at Fanshawe College presents a simultaneous issue of subject exploration and organizational collaboration to ensure a shared perspective is developed throughout the institution which leads to the cultivation of a positive learning environment.
This webinar will provide a historical foundation for military-connected learner investigation, recognition of parallel efforts across Canada, and detail the development of a military-connected campus at Fanshawe College. The desired outcome of this program is to provide military-connected students with a sense of purpose, autonomy, and increased employment competitiveness upon a return to the civilian workforce. The military-connected college project at Fanshawe unlocks the potential of this unique and underrepresented group of students.
