Consultations: CICan 3-year international strategy
Nov 4th, 2021

During the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and institutes have shown resilience and creativity, pivoting quickly to meet the needs of their students and communities through online instruction, providing applied-research services to local businesses re-tooling their operations to produce PPE, and offering free online training to individuals and SMEs affected by the crisis. The role of colleges and institutes continues to be just as important as we look to recover from this health crisis and its wide-ranging impacts, both social and economic.

Along with the education sector adapting to the challenges of a global pandemic, rapidly evolving globalization trends have led Canada’s colleges and institutes to reassess the way skills are acquired, to redefine the basic competencies required of workers, and to encourage internationalization.

Adapting to this world presents challenges and opportunities to Canadian colleges and institutes. CICan’s new international strategic plan will aim to position CICan members to benefit even more from the economic, social, and cultural opportunities that flow from international education and global engagement. It will serve as a framework for decision-making for the next three years about opportunities to pursue as a matter of priority, provide a basis for more detailed planning, and improve services to members.

Purpose of Consultation

This consultation will feed directly into the draft three-year international strategy which will be presented for review to CICan’s International Advisory Committee before the findings of the consultations are presented to the Board in November 2021.

The methodology used to consult CICan members for its new international strategy is focused on a deep dive into understanding the unique needs of all members. For this reason, CICan has divided its members (based on student populations) into small, medium, and large colleges/institutes. Each group will be consulted on two themes: 1. student recruitment and mobility and 2. international cooperation projects and other partnership development opportunities. Members will have the option to attend webinar consultations based on the size of their institution, and/or to respond to a survey and/or to request a one-on-one meeting. It is our hope that this will allow us as an association to better understand how we can best meet the needs of all members.

To date, consultations have been held with CICan staff. Next steps include consultations with CICan members and key external stakeholders. The strategy will be presented for final approval in March 2022.

Sharing your views

Your input is important. We encourage you to register and attend this consultation webinar to share your feedback.

We encourage you to select two representatives who work closest with the two defined themes: one person for student recruitment and mobility and one for international cooperation projects and other partnership development opportunities. We understand that for some institutions one individual works on both thematic areas.

For those members who are unable to make this session, a final consultation will be held on November 4th from 12:00-1:00pm (one session in English and one in French). This session will be a catch all sessions and will include small, medium and large institutions.
