CICan 2017 Indigenous Education Symposium Prelim. Program

Join colleagues from across the country to share and explore strategies on serving Indigenous learners and communities, and approaches to supporting reconciliation in Canada.

The CICan 2017 Indigenous Education Symposium will build on CICan’s Indigenous Education Protocol and the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2015), to highlight the role of post-secondary education institutions in achieving reconciliation.

Participants will learn about the experiences of colleges, institutes, cégeps and polytechnics in implementing the Principles of the Protocol and supporting reconciliation within their institutions and with the Indigenous communities they serve in their regions.

Through the lens of reconciliation, sessions and discussions will be structured around the following Principles of the Protocol to facilitate the sharing of experiences and exemplary practices:

  1. Governance Structures that Recognize and Respect Indigenous Peoples
  2. Curriculum and Learning Approaches that Implement Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural Traditions
  3. Approaches for Increasing Understanding and Reciprocity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples
  4. Approaches for Increasing the Number of Indigenous Employees at Colleges and Institutes
  5. Indigenous-Centred Holistic Services and Learning Environments for Learner Success
  6. Strong Partnerships to Support Self-determination of Indigenous Communities

<< Call for Presentations >>—CICan invites your proposals for presentations! We are seeking presentations related to these Principles to facilitate the exchange of exemplary practices through concurrent sessions.

We are also seeking proposals for presentations that explore how your institution integrates the leadership and engagement of Indigenous educators towards Indigenous health, applied research and innovation, and entrepreneurship and business development.

We hope you will join us.
